Our Origin Story
Where It All Began
Summit Hyperbarics and Wellness, Inc. (SHWI) was established on October 10, 2021, by healthcare professionals and community leaders in Idaho. With a profound understanding of the unique needs of military personnel and first responders, our goal is to provide a specialized medical facility that integrates expert care, advanced technology, and vital resources to serve these populations effectively.

Bonnie Carns brings extensive expertise in healthcare administration to Summit. Based in Boise, Idaho, she specializes in managing healthcare practices with a focus on delivering efficient, patient-centered care.
Holding a Master's in Nursing Leadership from Seattle Pacific University and a Bachelor of Science in Nursing Science from Seattle University, Bonnie combines her academic knowledge with a passion for holistic wellness. Her dedication to fostering growth and innovation in hyperbaric and wellness services is integral to Summit's mission of serving our military and first responder communities.

Steve Wyman

Medical Director
Dr. Steven Wyman is a distinguished U.S. Army veteran who served as a Medical Officer during Operation Desert Storm, earning both the Bronze Star and Combat Medical Badge. Since 1995, Dr. Wyman has dedicated his career to Emergency Medicine, with a specialized focus on Hyperbaric Medicine.
As Summit's Medical Director, he combines a wealth of medical expertise with an unwavering commitment to supporting veterans and first responders. His leadership ensures that each patient receives care tailored to their unique needs.

Sue Hicks

Sue Hicks is a Licensed Clinical Social Worker and Certified Alcohol and Drug Counselor with over 30 years of experience. Her career spans roles as a direct clinician, program developer, and supervisor in fields including psychiatric care, probation/parole services, and substance use disorders.
Sue spent 15 years at the Boise VA Medical Center, where she focused on trauma, readjustment issues, and therapeutic innovations. At Summit, Sue applies her extensive expertise to deliver compassionate and effective care to military personnel and first responders, helping them find pathways to healing.

Davin Strang

Director of Hyperbarics & Safety
Davin Strang, a retired U.S. Navy Diving Chief Warrant Officer, brings decades of expertise in hyperbaric chamber operations. Having qualified as a hyperbaric operator in 1992, he served for 24 years, overseeing treatments for decompression, emergency recompression, and specialized medical applications for service members and civilians alike.
At Summit, Davin's leadership ensures that hyperbaric treatments are administered with precision and safety, empowering patients on their wellness journey.

Kristi Hulquist
Director of Physical TherapyKristi Hulquist
Director of Physical Therapy
Kristi Hulquist is a U.S. Army veteran and an experienced physical therapist with a passion for rehabilitation and sports medicine. She earned her master's degree in Physical Therapy from the prestigious Army-Baylor program and served five years on active duty as a physical therapist at Fort Sam Houston and Madigan Army Medical Center. In her final year, she was attached to the 2nd Battalion, 75th Ranger Regiment, where she provided specialized care as their battalion physical therapist.
After transitioning out of the military, Kristi spent the next two decades refining her expertise in outpatient orthopedics and sports medicine, including 15 years at the Idaho Sports Medicine Institute at Boise State University. In addition to her work at Summit, she serves as the hurdles coach at Boise High School, where she mentors and trains young athletes in the community.
As Summit's Director of Physical Therapy, Kristi blends her deep knowledge of rehabilitation with a strong commitment to supporting veterans and first responders on their journey to recovery.

Troy Nickel

Director of Research & Quality
Troy Nickel is a seasoned research psychologist with deep expertise in behavioral health, corrections, and healthcare management. As Summit's Director of Research & Quality, he brings a data-driven perspective to enhance patient outcomes and support innovation in holistic care practices.
Troy also serves as an adjunct professor, teaching psychology at local colleges and inspiring the next generation of professionals. Outside of work, he values time with family, enjoys literature, and participates in sports.

J. Thomas Ahlquist III

Dr. Tommy Ahlquist is a visionary entrepreneur, emergency physician, and community developer with a passion for transforming lives and building thriving spaces. Over his 18-year medical career, he treated more than 45,000 patients while simultaneously launching multiple ventures across healthcare and real estate.
He founded Stat Pads in 2001, reshaping defibrillation services nationwide, and later Ahlquist Development, responsible for over 3.5 million square feet of real estate, including landmark projects like Eighth & Main, Ten Mile Crossing, and Eagle View Landing—home to Idaho’s first TopGolf.
As Chair of the Board, Dr. Ahlquist brings a rare blend of clinical insight and entrepreneurial spirit to Summit, helping drive our mission of healing through innovation, community growth, and purposeful design.

Jeffrey A. Niezgoda
Vice ChairJeffrey A. Niezgoda
Vice Chair
Dr. Jeffrey Niezgoda is a distinguished Air Force veteran and nationally recognized leader in hyperbaric and wound care medicine. A graduate of the U.S. Air Force Academy and the Uniformed Services University of Health Sciences, Dr. Niezgoda has spent over three decades improving outcomes for patients with complex wounds and compromised healing.
He is the former Medical Director of St. Luke’s Center for Comprehensive Wound Care and has served as President of both the American College of Hyperbaric Medicine and the American Professional Wound Care Association. He is also the founder and President Emeritus of AZH Wound & Hyperbaric Center MKE, a pioneer in advanced wound and regenerative services.
Currently, Dr. Niezgoda serves as Chief Medical Officer for Kent Imaging and President of WebCME, Auxillium Healthcare, and RxOS. His work has shaped industry standards and contributed to innovations in medical imaging, AI, and wound healing technologies. His expertise continues to guide Summit’s clinical excellence and forward-thinking research.

Roger Quarles

Dr. Roger Quarles is the Executive Director of the J.A. and Kathryn Albertson Family Foundation, where he leads efforts to invest in innovative learning, vibrant communities, and veteran transition support. His leadership has helped position Idaho as a national model for education reform and accessible recreation.
With a background in both business and education, Dr. Quarles has served as a teacher, principal, superintendent, and Chief Deputy State Superintendent of Idaho. His experience navigating complex challenges across rural and urban districts reflects his commitment to scalable, student-centered solutions.
A proud husband, father, and grandfather, Roger enjoys Idaho’s outdoors and is an avid tennis player. His perspective helps guide Summit’s strategic growth and dedication to serving those who serve our communities.
